They don't offer phone support. Isn't that a violation of contract? I think this has to be reported to BBB or some other agency. I would like to join a law suit against this company.

It's definitely pretty fishy. I initially emailed Customer Service 7 days before my free trial expired to cancel my account, never heard back! I did get an email from someone else in Linkedin saying my credit card had been declined and my premier account would expire in five days (a bad virus take hold of my laptop a few days ago and had to change all my bank accounts).

Very strange...

Hi JC,

I just had exactly the same experience with LinkedIn. Your blog is brilliant as I couldn't find a way to cancel at all from LinkedIn.

It may also help in a dispute with LI if you're in the UK, they will be covered by the Distance Selling regulations - whereby you get a 7 day "cooling off" period to cancel.

I received no email from LI, no correspondence or confirmation that the subscription had started (Free Trial).

This is a very unprofessional example of sharp practice from a professional social networking site.

Thanks for your help,

To be fair, there were very few websites like classmates.com when it started up in the late '90s. I signed up as a gold member in 1998, having fully read the TOS and completely accepting the annual $39 charge (which was not in small print back then). With it, I was able to keep in touch with people, and someone from my graduating class used it to organize a reunion. Before the arrival of myspace and facebook, classmates.com was THE place to find friends. (A few minor sites, like gradfinder.com and reunion.com, offered similar services, with paid membership offering more perks.) The site is becoming irrelevant now, and I ended my subscription three years ago. Still, classmates.com was useful during the height of its popularity. Calling it a scam would be highly inaccurate.

Hi Shelly, sorry to hear about your bad experience as well. I was fortunate that the credit did stick. These are the acts of a desperate company going down fighting (illegally I might add) against a tide of change as facebook becomes the defacto way of connecting with friends (both new and old).
